Through an advanced pain management protocol known as Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS), doctors and staff help patients get into optimal shape before ever undergoing surgery. With nutritional counseling, exercise and other procedures, patients can get back to their everyday lives as quickly as possible after surgery.
During surgery itself, patients also receive more precise fluid management and minimal narcotics, which allows them mobility sooner after surgery and contributes to faster recovery times.
Martha, who underwent surgery at Northern Westchester Hospital, is one of many patients who was able to take advantage of this leading edge pre-surgical program. "I had a partial nephrectomy -- kidney surgery -- to remove two tumors on my left kidney," she said.
By working with Dr. Warren Bromberg, chief of urology, director of the prostate cancer program and co-director of NWH’s Institute for Robotic and Minimally Invasive Surgery, she was able to effectively prepare for her surgery and was feeling better than ever in a matter of days afterward.
"The team at NWH was really impressive," she said. "With the ERAS protocol I was able to leave the hospital the next day after a four hour surgery, and I did."
